Data Recovery Assessment
Understand the options for inaccessible files, incomplete backups, and damaged media before committing to a recovery approach.

Recovery depends on the condition of the device or media, the way data was stored, available backups, encryption, and what has happened since the information became inaccessible. No single method fits every source.
For attorneys and law firms, the initial assessment connects the technical condition of a source to the question that needs to be answered. Jerrad Edwards draws on computer repair, electronics, backup systems, and data migration experience to identify practical next steps.
What we review
- The type and current condition of the source.
- Available backups, exports, credentials, and prior recovery attempts.
- The specific files or records needed and relevant deadlines.
- Whether the work fits the available methods or requires specialist facilities.
Assess. Plan. Document.

Identify a realistic path
Discuss feasibility, dependencies, and whether specialist support is needed.
Agree on the next step
Define the work and how results or limitations will be documented.
Recovery questions
Can deleted data always be recovered?
No. Overwriting, encryption, storage behavior, and missing backups can make recovery impossible. An assessment explains what can reasonably be attempted.
What should I include in an initial inquiry?
Describe the device or file type, the issue, whether backups exist, and any previous attempts to access or recover the data. Start with general details rather than uploading case material.
Is recovered data automatically ready for legal use?
Recovery and interpretation are separate tasks. Counsel may also need source documentation, context, and an explanation of limitations. Those deliverables should be included in the agreed scope.
Discuss the source and the objective.
